Her original 1962 Gardner 6LX oil engine is matched to Kitchen patent clam-shell rudder gear for outstanding handling.

The Surveyor-class half-deckers were designed for master mariners employed by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. They were built by the Wallasey firm who built generations of rugged West African surf boats. SURVEYOR is fitted with Kitchen's patent reversing rudders, using reversed directional thrust in the way clam-shell thrust reversing systems operate on airliners, to allow the single engine and the drive train to run at a constant, economical speed, even in reverse or when stationary.

A classic, economical and highly-manoeuvrable motor yacht with a low air draught, perfect for Thames or Norfolk Broads cruising after cruising under private ownership in the Irish Sea and becoming an admired vistor to the Peel Traditional Boat Weekend in the Isle of Man.
Engines: Legendary six-cylinder Gardner 6LX, 1962, 110hp @ 1300 rpm hp [80,9Kw] driving phosphor-bronze shaft through Gardner 2UC gearbox, delivering 12 knots on 2 litres per hour fuel consumption. The Manchester engineers Hugh & John Gardner designed the LX series engine in 1958: ‘Even to this day the 6LX and the 8LX are often described as the finest heavy duty diesel engines ever produced, the first production engines to achieve 40 per cent thermal efficiency.’
The Kitchen rudder is a phosphor-bronze combination clam-shell rudder and directional propulsion delivery system for relatively slow speed displacement boats which was invented in the early 20th century by John G. A. Kitchen of Storrs, Windermere. The rudder becomes a directional thruster and allows the engine to maintain constant revolutions and direction of drive shaft rotation while altering thrust by use of a control which directs thrust forward or aft. Only the rudder pivots; the propeller itself is on a fixed shaft. Controlled from a blue wheel on the helm the bronze gearing system allows the engine to be left running in gear at a constant speed, even when required to be stationary, and the vessel can be turned in her own length.
Hull: Heavy oak frames with copper-fastened mahogany planking, carvel-built and fitted with the steel lifting brackets supplied by Henry B. Hornby & Co, builders of the famous surf boats used in West Africa for transhipping cargo at sea and landing on storm beaches.
Electrical and Navigational system: Domestic and engine starting batteries, Sestrel compass, Raymarine radar, Sailor RT1445 marine vhf radio, bilge pumps, navigation lights. .

She has had two private owners since she was de-commissioned by the MDH company.
